Matthew 23:25-28 • Some of our biggest problems don’t show on the outside • I am struggling with my feelings, especially sorrow. • I am struggling with envy and/or bitterness. • I am struggling with feeling of inferiority. • I am struggling with the sense that I am failing. • I am angry that people aren’t appreciating me enough.
Matthew 23:25-28 • People around me seem very unreasonable. • I am worried about aging and death. • My walk with God seems dry or stale. • I am having trouble with my children, and I’m not satisfied with my responses.
Romans 5-8 • Refusal to understand Romans 5-8 could result in proposing that we grow spiritually by tinkering with our outward actions while leaving the inside untouched. • Not understanding Romans 5-8 could be one factor keeping us from moving on to real maturity in our Christian lives.
Seeking Change • What does this have to do with Adam?
Seeking Change • What does this have to do with Adam? • Our problem is not only what we do, but also what we are. • Our doing arises out of being.
In Adam • Romans 5:12-21 teaches that we have ALL inherited a certain identity, a certain nature from our ancestor, Adam – sin!
In Adam • Paul wants us to see not only what we inherited from Adam (our identity as a sinner), also how we inherited it (the principle of federal headship).
Federal Headship • How did we get our fallen nature? • Psalms 51:5 • Ephesians 2:1,3
Federal Headship • Like Adam – Christ has also become a federal head. • We can shift from being in Adam to being in Christ.
