  2. LOCATION THE MUNICIPALITY OF CAMBRE IS LOCATED ON THE NORTHWEST OF A CORUÑA (GALICIA-SPAIN)

Information POPULATION: 23,930 INHABITANTS (January, 2011) Women 12150 Men11780 SURFACE: 41 Km2 POPULATION DENSITY: 584 inhabitants / Km2 PARISHES (adm. subdivision): 12(2 urban and 10 rural) SETTLEMENT AREAS: 120 AVERAGE AGE: 40.1 years The profile shows young families with children, most of them coming from other municipalities in the province of A Coruña, who reside in Cambre due to housing prices and its proximity to the neighbouring municipality of A Coruña. A large share of this population increase can be found in two new developments in the parishes of O Temple (development of O Graxal) and Cambre (development of a Barcala) making up for 64% of the population. A large share of the population travels to the city of A Coruña for their daily activities.

The Law of local affairs considers municipalities as the most immediate pathways for citizen's participation in public affairs.   6. BACKGROUND • The Municipal Volunteering Programme of Cambre started in 2001 • Due to a lack of third sector organisations, the municipality started managing the services directly • Information, guidance and mediation are also offered by the service

BACKGROUND • Act 10/2011 defines an organisation of voluntary action as: “those public or private, non-profit organisations, legally registered and with their own legal status that, in an organised and stable manner, undertake specific volunteering programmes related to activities of general interest”. • The municipality of Cambre is registered as voluntary action organisation nr. L-56

MUNICIPAL VOLUNTARY ACTION PLAN PHILOSOPHY We understand volunteering as the right of all citizens to participate in the development of their community We understand volunteering as organised action to improve the social wellbeing and the quality of life of the community through social change and transformation The most important feature of volunteering in Cambre is self-management and the participation of volunteers in decision making We understand the training of volunteers as a key pillar of voluntary action

  29. Challenges: • One of the features of volunteers in Cambre is their capacity for self-organisation through assemblies in a horizontal fashion. The level of participation in the organisation and decision-making is complete. The creation of an external organisation of voluntary action is a challenge we are considering. • A short-term challenge is to deepen and open up volunteers to the use of IT and 2.0 webs. • To manage higher commitment and permanence levels in the organisation.
