My Story • Diagnosed with Autism at age of 4 • Main symptoms early on: • Motor and Speech Difficulties • Transitioning • Emotional Issues • Sensitivity to touch, feel and sound • Started to write a book based on my life and my experience in school
Public School • School Transitioning • 3 different pre schools • 3 different public schools in first four years of grammar school • Fitting in • Multi-handicapped classrooms • Label of a “Special Ed” kid • Inclusion led to seclusion • Legal battles
Private School • Community Lower School • Out of district, only 160 students • 40 Minutes away from my hometown • Reward Systems for Performance • PT embedded into Physical Education Curricular • Community High School • Across street from Lower School (same number of students) • Laptops for all students
My College Life • Freshman Year: The Transition • Sophomore Year: Advocacy • Junior Year: Learning from Experience • Senior Year: Building Confidence
College Life • Freshman Year: The Transition • Getting used to the dorms • IEP to Reasonable Accommodations • Time Management • Subjecting myself to change • Adapting to knowing no one
College Life • Sophomore Year: Advocacy • Start of a Club (SDA) • Advocating for LD individuals • Joining a Service Fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega) • Built Service Opportunities focused on Disability Awareness • Resident Assistant • Became RA to advocate and help those transition to dorm life SDA Logo
Student Disability Awareness • No disability awareness organizations in Seton Hall’s History • Mission is to help eliminate barriers and spread awareness for all disabilities SDA E-Board (Past and Present)
College Life • Junior Year: Learning From Experience • Started working for Autism Speaks • Began working with Social Media • Senior Year: Confidence • Interest in Communication Field • Building public speaking skills • Speaking at different venues • Deciding to go to Graduate School • Transitioning to workforce • Transitioning into Adulthood with autism • Advocating more for Disabled rights
Advocacy • Be your own best self advocate • Speak Up! • Learn to think with the end in mind • Set small and long term goals for yourself • Remember to give back • Leadership has a great deal to do with serving others
My Findings • Find your structure • 2 types of learning/2 different missions • In Class and Out • Picking out High Schools/Colleges • Transitioning to Adulthood • Always Take Notes • Life is unfair at times • DON’T let yourself turn into the victim!
