  1. JOHN 13B: A NEW COMMANDMENT

  2. What a stark contrast of behaviour between Jesus and that of Judas Iscariot and Peter in John 13: • Judas valued money more than Jesus • Peter valued himself more than Jesus * Jesus however was willing to sacrifice his life for the sake of others. See John 13:27-29.

  3. A. WHAT ARE THE FACTORS WHICH LED TO THE FINAL DOOM OF JUDAS (VERSES 18-30)? In verse 21, Jesus was deeply grieved over Judas’ act of betrayal. The following events eventually caused the downfall of Judas: • Judas completely disregarded the earlier and later warnings of Jesus. • By ignoring the first warning about one year earlier (John 6:70-71) • By failing to comply with the stern warning during the last supper in John 13:21-26 and Matthew 20:20-25 1 • Judas continued to toy around with the sin of stealing from the common fund. • By not drastically cutting off his pilfering habit (John 12:6) 2

  4. A. WHAT ARE THE FACTORS WHICH LED TO THE FINAL DOOM OF JUDAS (VERSES 18-30)? Judas reached the point of no return in John 13:27. Jesus gave up Judas at this point. See John 13:27b. Compare with Romans 1:24, 26, 28. • Judas chose deceit and hypocrisy rather than genuine repentance. • By pretending to be a true follower while all the time plotting to betray Jesus 3

  5. A. WHAT ARE THE FACTORS WHICH LED TO THE FINAL DOOM OF JUDAS (VERSES 18-30)? Application: How do we deal with our personal sins? * Note how Judas dealt with his sin of betrayal in Matthew 27:1-5 Biblical repentance from sin involves a 3-fold step: A personal confession of our sins to God Luke 18:13; 1 John 1:9 A resolute desire to turn away from our sins Luke 15:18 3 A real mourning over our sins Matthew 5:4 2 1

  6. B. WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE NEW COMMANDMENT OF JESUS (VERSES 34-35)? It is a new or fresh commandment because: It supersedes the standard of the old commandment “You shall love your neighbour as you love yourself.” It is based on a new and higher standard of love “… even as I have loved you…” Application: How does love attract people to Christ?

  7. C. HOW DID PETER EXPRESS HIS PERSONAL LOVE FOR JESUS (VERSES 36-38)? Peter meant well when he uttered his promise to lay down his life for Jesus. However, his human attempt to love Jesus backfired. What are the characteristics of human love? It has a limited capacity It is conditional in nature It is often impure in motive

  8. C. HOW DID PETER EXPRESS HIS PERSONAL LOVE FOR JESUS (VERSES 36-38)? God is not asking each one of us to use our human love to love God or to love one another. “....and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:5 Application: How do we express our love for God? See 1 John 4:19-21.

  9. CONCLUSION How do we practise the new commandment today? See 1 John 3:16-18. Love one another
