John Casper hays • When Mary was Thirteen, she married a man named John Hays • John was a barber in Carlisle Pennsylvania • He initially served in Col. Thomas Proctor's First Pennsylvania Artillery (1775–76)
Life in the war • Her husband was a private in the Battle of Monmouth • She eventually joined her husband in the war as a camp follower during the Philadelphia Campaign • She earned her title “Molly Pitcher” from carrying pitchers of water to her husband’s campsite
After the war • After the war Mary and William went back to Pennsylvania and settled in Carlisle • Mary went back to work as a “charwomen” in the State House of Carlisle • Several years later, John died
