Portraits In Pencil HS Drawing
Why are portraits important? • The intent of a portrait is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of a person.
Portraits have a LONG history • Created since the “beginning of time” • Started out of a necessity • Portraits began for two reasons: • Status symbols- aka bragging rights • Documentary- to remember loved ones separated by distance or death
LONG history • Portraits also emerged to capture images of nations’ leaders. • Kings • Presidents • Prime Ministers • George Washington was painted more than 100 times! By one painter!
Most Famous Portrait • Mona Lisa created by Leonardo de Vinci.
Difference between Portrait and Self-Portrait Portrait Self- Portrait
Portraits Today • As time has changed, so have portraits. • Done in many different styles • Many different materials are being used--most importantly photography. • Portraits still focus on the head and shoulder area, however.
Your Project! • We will be creating a portrait using graphite (pencil) and a photograph. • The photograph can be of someone famous, someone influential to you, or just someone interesting! • We will be splitting the photograph so that you draw one part and the other is used as a guide.
Photograph • Your photograph can come from these places: • Magazine • Book • Internet • Your own photo • Then we will print/copy your photo from my computer to the teacher’s lounge. • You will decided how you want to split your photo • Glue one part down to the drawing paper and the other part will be used to guide you through “finishing” the image with your pencil(s).
