Purpose While there are many purposes to why European castles were built there were primarily three reasons. The obvious is that they were built for defense, whether it be to protect the people inside or a nearby resource, for example a trade route or river. It could also be used as an offensive tool during times of war, where an empire or a kingdom was trying to expand. Then as weapons advanced and times of war seem to die down many monarchs built them for comfort and looks, much like a billionaire would build a mansion.
