Determining the Polarity of a Molecule • If there is one central atom • No lone pairs and all the bonds are identical, the molecule is nonpolar.
Determining the Polarity of a Molecule • Draw a sketch of the molecule showing its molecular geometry. • Use arrows to depict the polarity of the bonds. Use longer arrows to show the relative polarities • If arrows are symmetrical, the molecule is nonpolar • All others, polar
