I. Review: Elements of communism • Economic system proposed by Karl Marx, a German philosopher, in 1848 • Developed in response to the horrible working conditions of the Industrial Revolution. Marx argued that capitalists exploited workers, whose lives were miserable, for their own profit. • Marx proposed a workers revolution, where the proletariat (the working class) would overthrow the bourgeoisie (the rich, the factory owners, the rulers) • Once the bourgeoisie were overthrown through violent revolution, the proletariat would set up a system where there was no private ownership and all goods and services would be shared equally.

In chapter one, Old Major's also teaches the animals a song called "Beasts of England." The song is a parody of "The Internationale," a popular Communist protest song. It was first written as the anthem of the Paris Commune, a revolutionary group that briefly tried to take over Paris and establish a communist government. This happened in 1871 after France's loss to Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War, which was under the leadership of Otto Von Bismarck.
