Air Quality Outreach Program for Schools Goals: • Reduce children & teens exposure to poor air quality • Educate students & keep community informed: -daily air quality conditions using simple school-based flag notification system -detailed emails & texts based on hourly real-time notifications • Prioritize Anti-Idling messages • Promote Health Air Living lifestyles
The Program Provides: FREE TO ANY SCHOOL (PUBLIC OR PRIVATE) • Four Air Quality Flags (high quality, weatherized) • Classroom posters • Bilingual student brochures • Anti-Idling signage for parking lots • Healthy Air Living kids Incentives • Educational workshops for parents, teachers & administrators • Daily notifications of air quality forecast via email • RAAN web portal, emails, texts, iPhone app • RAAN activity guidelines • Alternative Indoor Activities pdf
Air Quality Flag Program • The Flag Program provides schools with free flags that serve as a visual communicator of daily air quality conditions in the area
Anti-idling Campaign • The “No-Idling” Law was passed in California to reduce public exposure to airborne toxins due to school bus and vehicle idling near schools • The No-idling sign encourages parents to turn off their engines while waiting for their children.
Drive Less • Carpool • Walk • Ride a bicycle • Ride a skateboard/skates • Ride public transit • Telecommute
Benefits of the Program • Know the current air quality conditions • Helps staff make informed decisions about outdoor activities • Underscores that physical activities can be accomplished even on a red day • Encourage an active role in maintaining or improving the lung health of our children • Assist school administrators to adopt outdoor air quality policies for physical activity
