30 NUMBER OF YEARS THAT U.S. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT GAINS IN SCIENCE HAVE BEEN FLAT
240,000 ESTIMATED NUMBER OF SCIENCE & MATH TEACHERS NEEDED IN THE NEXT DECADE
Attitudes & Expectations • Just over 50% of states require 3 or more years of both math & science for H.S. graduation • U.S. belief that aptitude matters more than effort • Achievement correlates negatively with student confidence in their knowledge
Attitudes & Expectations • 67%: greatly increasing number & quality of math & science courses would improve H.S. education • 62%: “crucial” for most students to learn higher level math skills • BUT: when asked about their own children, the majority of parents are satisfied with the amount of math & science taught • “Kids are not taught enough math & science” scores 20 points lower than 1994 response Public Agenda 2008
