IAT 100 week 04 • Transitions • Activity
Or a use a poem or story • Have a mix of pictures and text. • Movement is choreographed around object or character • Movement (object, frame, transitions) should emphasis content. • Pick content that has a simple message (do not try to recreate a film). • Student examples: • http://vimeo.com/40119991 • http://vimeo.com/39987817 • http://www.sfu.ca/iatwork/202/summer2010/project1/ • Other examples: • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTkR0ixaLJw • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc8iCAcFalc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldf2zjek-sU&feature=related
Sequence • Two approaches: • Classic approach to editing: • Establish location and characters and then give details • This may be reversed. • Contemporary approach to editing: • Build space out of a series of close-ups • More intense, well suited to small scale projects.
Classic The "180° rule," shown in the diagram below, dictates that the camera should stay in one of the areas on either side of the axis of action Craig Frazier Studio : Bladerunning Description: Flash Advertisement

Motion literacy – review object • Components: • Motion of objects within the frame • Motion of the frame (frame mobility) • Transitions between scenes
Core principles (or how to make it interesting) • Anticipation • Follow through • Slow in and slow out • Timing • Squash and Stretch • Secondary action (or action and reaction) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqGL1ZLk3n8

Mobile framing: The Ken Burns effect Student example based on: http://vimeo.com/40119991 Motion Control 3D: Bringing Your Photos to Life in Three Dimensions – Lynda.com
Frame mobility • Panning / whip pan • Mimic eye looking around • Tilting • Horizontal can emphasis height • Downward, slow reveal • Tracking: forward, backward, diagonally, circular side-to-side • Build anticipation as it reveals off screen space • Create continuous space (instead of transitions or cuts).

Scenes & transitions • The shot in AE is the length of time before a change in framing. • Transition is a way of joining or linking your shots together. • Two main types of transitions: optical or cut (cut is the most common) • Mobile Framing, way of changing framing without a cut (sequence shot).
Transitions: optical • Fade to black or white • Dissolve • Wipe • Superimpositions • ***beware AE transition effects not distracting in our work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKU6XNAm-KI
Transitions: The cut A cut or edit is an immediate transition from one shot to the next. You will need to consider how to make cuts flow visually from one shot to the next. Use: • Graphical Match – connect two separate images • Jump Cut – drop frames to create a disjointed effect. • Montage – series of images to create symbolic meaning. • Edit on action – cut on the movement of an object.
Graphical match Choreograph motion based on matching graphic qualities and using frame movement.

Editing on Action • Shot-by-shot pg. 154- 155 • Cutting on Movement Exits and Entrances Clearing the frame Same principle shot many times for different editing possibilities.
