Marches Access Point Kington Herefordshire England
What we do • Access to computers and the internet • Training courses • Photocopying and small run printing • Website hosting for small businesses and organisations • Technical support for computers • Supporting the unemployed gain skills and improve their confidence and self esteem
Who do we help • Older people (50+) • Unemployed people • Lone parents • People with learning disabilities • Disabled people • The community • Groups, organisations, small to medium sized businesses
How did we come to work with this project • MAP worked on a project Unlocking the Potential of 50+ with PISCESWM in 2010 • I gave a presentation in Prague in 2010 about our contribution to the project • Jarka attended the presentation
What have we learned • The economic and financial situation is the similar England and Czech Republic stemming from the 2008 financial crisis • We both have high youth unemployment • The UK has a long tradition of volunteering in all aspects of community life
What is different • The UK has Equality and Diversity laws – everyone must be treated fairly • 9 Protected Areas are: • Age • Disability • Gender Reassignment • Marriage and Civil Partnerships • Race • Religion and Belief • Sex • Sexual Orientation
Reflection • Looking at what we do through the eyes of others • How can we achieve better outcomes • How can we help others to achieve what they want to achieve
Ideas for you to take away If we were to give you some thoughts, they would be: • Work with specific groups • Challenge assumptions • Group led – their voice
How to do this • Create the environment for change • Raise pubic awareness • Join together to lobby for change • Monitor current practice • Create the common cause between different groups facing dicrimination
And finally…. It has been a personally rewarding experience to work with our Czech Republic partners Thank you
