Noyce Cohort 3 Leadership Project: Teaching with Tablet Technology Travis Plume Jefferson City HS
JCHS Group Project Proposal • What impact does tablet technology have upon student learning and engagement? • The explicit instruction and integration of technology models the expected competencies of the modern workforce (www.p21.org).
Guiding Principles in Proposal Development • Previous technologies have failed to live up to their potential in the science classroom (http://www.macworld.com/article/153672/2010/08/1). • No technology can replace or compensate for ineffective teaching. • Technology should streamline or increase the efficiency of the process for which it was designed.
Potential Pitfalls • Novelty of the new technology is temporary and wasteful if not directed to increase or enhance the learning process for students. • Total reinvention of current teaching strategies is not necessary.
Project Goal • I intend to develop multiple activities adaptable to both middle and high school science classrooms utilizing tablet technology: • Photosynthesis Lab • Catalase Lab • Osomosis Lab

Refined Project Goal • I intend to develop multiple activities adaptable to both middle and high school science classrooms utilizing tablet technology within the context of Project-Based Learning. • Photosynthesis PBL • Enzyme PBL • Cellular Transport PBL
Project Status/Timeline • December, 2011 • Site visit for PBL, Coppell, TX • April, 2012 • 5 Ipads Acquired • June, 2012 • LabQuest 2 Acquired • July, 2012 • Project-Based Learning Workshop (3 Days) • Photosynthesis PBL Unit Complete • Photosynthesis & Ipads @ MU 4-H Camp • August, 2012-May 2013 • Develop Enzyme & Cellular Transport PBL Units • Summer, 2013 • Present Ipad PBL Units to LSGC Cohort
Rethinking Learning? • Learning is supported by technology • Technology is a driving force • The foundation of the learning process must emphasize intentionality • Technology facilitates the creative abilities of the student • MacArthur Foundation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0xa98cy-Rw&feature=related)
