Matthew 1:1-17 • According to Jewish law, the eldest son had the right of inheritance, even if adopted. • As Joseph’s first son, Jesus would inherit his estate • Yet, Joseph was not really Jesus’ father!

Matthew 1:1-17 • Jesus’ credentials: • A son of Abraham • A son of Jacob • A son of David • Qualified to inherit David’s throne • But not the son of Jeconiah!
Matthew 1:1-17 • Why believe the Bible? • Because it is the only scripture in the world that has the self-authentication of predictive prophecy • Numerous other reasons as well • God has been orchestrating his plan of salvation for thousands of years • Tonight you are sitting here, confronted with the evidence of his working--what will you do?

Matthew 1:1-17 • The Pharisees, against whom Matthew writes, were self-righteous, racist and proud of their wealth • Matthew gets in their face with an important fact: • God uses common, sinful people to advance his plan • He is prepared to use us as well! • This passage teaches pure Grace
