WHAT IS WALK IN OUR SHOES? • Statewide education campaign focused on mental health and the elimination of stigma. • Seeks to eliminate bias and prejudice by de-bunking myths and educating 9-13 year olds about mental health and wellness. • Promotes help-seeking by encouraging kids to talk about mental health and confide in a trusted adult. • Utilizes positive, authentic and age-appropriate stories. Funded by counties through the voter approved Mental Health Services (Prop 63).

OVERALL GOALS OF THE CAMPAIGN To inform youth that: • Mental health challenges are common; • There are different kinds of mental health challenges; • People with mental health challenges can manage/recover to live normal and healthy lives; • The vast majority of people with mental health challenges are as predictable and non-violent as anyone else; • Young people are encouraged to speak up and ask questions about mental health.

  10. 2013 EVALUATION • In a pre-post evaluation, RAND found significant positive shifts occurred after the performance and knowledge about mental health drastically increased. • 96% of teachers reported that the materials provided were useful. • A survey revealed that a key strength of this tour appeared to be in its ability to spark conversation about mental health in and out of the classroom.
