Me and My Blogs: a case study MLA Web 2.0 Workshop Bath, 8th March 2010 Ann Chapman UKOLN UKOLN is supported by:
About me • Librarian – issue desk, cataloguing • Joined UKOLN in 1987 • Then using PC for a few tasks • Now using some (not all) of Web 2.0 • Learn on the job, when need arises • Finding the right tool for the task
CIG Blog – how we started • Set up by committee member (AW) • Used Blogspot • Only AW can post • Remember to email AW • Dependent on AW having time to post • Then posting rights extended to committee officers (4)
CIG Blog – new host • CILIP upgraded its Web site • Requested groups to use the CILIP blogging facility • Migration – AW dealt with this • Old content? Lost • Content since January 2007 http://communities.cilip.org.uk/blogs/catalogueandindex/default.aspx
CIG Blog – today • Admin by CILIP Web team (e.g. they change who has posting rights) • Team effort – all committee members able to post, anyone can comment • Blog manager (spam, comments, reminders to post) • Frequency erratic – viewings drop • Good way to start – don’t feel so exposed
Cultural Heritage blog • Colleague did the set up • Team of 3 – each has subject area • Guest posts • Aim for 1 post each per month minimum • It does get easier as time goes by • Challenge of finding suitable topics • My area of focus is ‘libraries + digital’ and ‘the new to Web 2.0 perspective’
Learning new skills • It’s not just text … • Adding links • Adding images • It’s not just writing my posts … • Checking for spam • Setting up twitter & twitterfeed accounts to publicise the blog • http://blogs.ukoln.ac.uk/cultural-heritage/
JISC SIS Landscape Study • Using blog for different purpose • Did set up myself • Posts for news items • Pages • For evidence collecting via comments • For literature survey • For case studies http://blogs.ukoln.ac.uk/jisc-sis-landscape/
JISC Study Blog • Study – 6 month timespan • JISC requirement – available for 3 yrs • Don’t want to collect more data • Closing down posts • Dealing with comments • What happens in 3 yrs time?
What have I learnt? Set up • Need to think about • Purpose • Audience • Effort (Who posts? Who manages?) • Cut off point for comments (no more after 20 days?) • Policy ‘we reserve right to delete comments we feel to be inappropriate’ • Close down policy
What have I learnt? Ongoing • Checking for spam • Approving comments • Responding to comments if needed • Ensuring post frequency met
What have I learnt? Close down • Why close down? • Final post(s) • Will it still be visible or will it disappear? • Archiving content • Policy on close down ideally decided at start
