About TRC • One among 27 institutes under ICMR • Established in 1956 (a project) • Under joint auspices of ICMR, Madras Stat Govt.,WHO, BMRC • 600+ staff located in Chennai, Tiruvallur & Madurai • Working on TB Research (chemotherapy & control program) • International Center for Excellence in Research (ICER-NIH)
As part of my doctoral program, a study has been undertaken to Develop an Institutional Repository for Tuberculosis Research Centre Digitize TRC research publications Objectives
Scope and Coverage To accomplish the stated objectives the study intends to include the following • Organization: Tuberculosis Research Centre, Chennai • Materials: TRC’s research publications • Language: English • Period: 1958 to 2007
Methodology This study is carried out in four phases • Phase I deals with identification, collection and consolidation of the research publications of the Tuberculosis Research Centre • Phase IIconverts print articles in to an electronic format (pdf) • Phase IIIAssess hardware and software requirements • Phase IV develop an Institutional Repository for the Tuberculosis Research Centre
Justification This study serves the following main purposes • It allows researchers to access not so easily available Indian papers • It brings out India Centric Specific Subject Repository • It helps to ensure the long term preservation • It leads to space saving for better library management • It serves as a single access point for the research output of TRC
Work in progress • After the date collection, the print articles were converted into electronic format • Software chosen: DSpace - Windows version - database was designed & developed • A sample of the interface of the database is as shown:
Conclusion • DSpace installation – difficulty • NRC-FOSS • DSpace on Windows / Linux • DSpace on Linux – problem yet to solve On completion of this work it is proposed to post this data as a web page in our institutional web site to enable open access for a larger user community.
