introduction • Check out this video
Parts of the circulatory system - Divided into three major parts: • - The Heart • - The Blood • - The Blood Vessels
The heart • The hearts job is to keep blood pumping through out you body. • Size of your fist • Located on the left, center, side of your body.
4 types of blood cells • Red Blood Cells • White Blood Cells • Platelets • Plasma
Red blood cells • Carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide • Pick up oxygen in the lungs and transport into all the body cells
White blood cells • fights off germs • attacks germs when entered into the body • sometimes they need help from a doctor • Prescribe an antibiotic to help
Platelets • Helps stop bleeding • Get cut, broken blood vessels and blood leaks out • To plug it, platelets start to stick to the opening • When the plug is formed then the cut will stop bleeding
plasma • liquid part of the body • half of body's blood made out of plasma • made in the liver
The blood vessels • Arteries • Capillaries • Veins
circulation • Heart acts as double pump. • Blood from the right side is dark red and low oxygen. • Travels through pulmonary arteries to the lungs where is gets fresh oxygen and becomes bright red. • Once through that cycle blood from the lungs go back the the left side of the hearts pump. • Then pumped out to the body
Diseases/ disorders • High blood pressure • Diabetes • Arteriosclerosis
High blood pressure • high pressure in the arteries • Symptoms are “silent killer”, headache, dizziness, and nosebleeds. • Diagnosed by elevated blood pressure. • Treated by medicine. • Curable with medication.
diabetes • When pancreas does not make insulin and your blood sugar gets too high • Symptoms can include excessive thirst and weight loss • Diagnosed by blood tests • Treated by medicine • Curable to a certain point by medicine/ insulin
atherosclerosis • The hardening of the arteries. • Happens when fat, cholesterol, and other materials build up on the walls of arteries. • Don’t get symptoms for decades. • Diagnosed by medical testing. • Treatable by exercising and quitting smoking. • Sometimes curable by medication and surgery.
three kinds of circulation • Pulmonary Circulation • Coronary Circulation • Systemic Circulation
Pulmonary Circulation • The movement of blood from the heart to the lungs • then back to the heart again
Coronary Circulation • The movement of blood throughout the tissues of the heart
Systemic Circulation • It supplies nourishment to all of the tissues and organs throughout the body, except for the heart and lungs.
Cant live without it! • Blood needs to get to every cell and organ in your body. • Cells will die without oxygen and nutrients • from the blood. • Soon , you will die.
Interesting facts • The heart beats around 3 billion times in an average persons life. • It takes 20 seconds for a red blood cell to circle the body. • About 8 million blood cells die every second. • Red blood cells can live about 4 months going around the body.
