Overview Introducing Efficiency Smart ENERGY STAR Benchmarking Wastewater Treatment Project Experience
Who We Are A turnkey provider of energy efficiency services for American Municipal Power’s participating communities Residential, commercial and industrial services
How We Operate The communities that have joined Efficiency Smart are funding the program in order to achieve a target amount of electrical energy savings over three years. Each community has a specific target for savings that is based on the characteristics of the community. The savings from energy efficiency is cost-effective and cheaper than new power supply costs. Efficiency Smart tracks and reports savings achieved in every participating community and the savings are verified annually by an independent third-party evaluator.
Who We Serve 49 successful programs in non-contiguous public power communities in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania
The Value of Portfolio Manager Energy assessment and management. Apples-to-apples comparison and ranking with other Wastewater Treatment Plants. A tool to set an energy consumption baseline with the means to track progress. A visible score to show your community.
The Process of Benchmarking • Portfolio Manager Asks For • Design Flow Rate • Average Influent Biological Oxygen Demand • Average Effluent Biological Oxygen Demand • Trickle Filtration Process (Y/N) • Nutrient Removal Process (Y/N) • 12+ months of Average Influent Flow (MGD) • 12+ months of electricity and natural gas usage
Benchmarking Case Study Municipality with two Wastewater Treatment Plants Scores lead to the question, “why?” Investment vs. recognition
Benchmarking Steps Forward • Efficiency Smart hopes to • Assist all municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants in our territory set up an EnergyStar Portfolio Manager account • Show the municipal WWTP managers how their Energy usage / MGD Flow compares against other WWTP facilities in Ohio • Develop regional, energy efficiency ‘Round Table’ meetings, where facility managers can discuss and showcase their experiences with energy efficiency
Experiences with WWTPs Efficiency Smart provides tailored solutions to meet your various energy efficiency needs. We assist by: • Identifying opportunities • Providing technical review of proposals • Specifying equipment
How We Can Help • Conduct a technical walk through of plant • Review project in design phase • Identify custom solutions • Benchmark your facility • Provide Vendor Partner Ally resources
Wastewater Treatment Case • Project Facts at a Glance: • Annual kWh savings: 307,300 • Annual cost savings: $31,500 • Lifetime cost savings: $314,700 • Payback: 1.99 years • Annual CO2 reductions: 611,600 lbs. • Plant has oxidation ditch with three 75 HP motors and two 60 HP motors • VFDs installed on each motor to match energy usage to demand • Reduced energy consumption despite expanded capacity • Enhanced efficiency will also reduce maintenance and repair costs
Recap Efficiency Smart has helped American Municipal Power’s participating communities become more energy-efficient for three years. Efficiency Smart’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager Initiative is a value added service that helps WWTP facility managers tackle their energy consumption and compare against peers. Efficiency Smart has experience helping WWTPs technical assistance with efficiency projects, which have lead to rebate incentives.
