Review of Lit Terms Irony – contrast between what we expect and what actually happens 3 types of irony: Verbal • -- when someone says one thing but means the opposite • Dramatic -- when we know what is in store for a character, but the character does not know Situational -- when an event is contrary to what we expected

  3. Review of Lit Terms Symbol –an ordinary object, event, person, or animal to which we have attached extraordinary meaning and significance. Allegory – a story in which characters, settings, and actions stand for something beyond themselves. Satire -- any kind of writing, speaking, or art that ridicules some weakness in individuals or society

  5. Anticipation Guide • The public cannot rule itself. We need strong leaders in order to maintain structure and order in a society. • Violence is justified if it serves the greater good. • If a figure of authority disrespects/mistreats you, it is your responsibility to speak out for your rights.

Anticipation Guide • Religion has no place in politics. • All works of literature are socially motivated. • It is impossible to maintain a Utopian, or perfect, society. • Propaganda isn’t necessarily bad if it keeps the peace. i.e. “What the public doesn’t know won’t hurt them.” • History is doomed to repeat itself.

Anticipation Guide • The personal feeling of accomplishment that one feels after a job well done is far more valuable than any sort of financial reward or incentive. • Socialism/Communism could successfully work in real life, if given the proper conditions. • Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  8. Web quest • Since Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian Revolution, you will spend the rest of the class period completing the web quest to better understand the allegorical elements of the novel.
