  1. Which Taxi to Take??? Turn your desk around so you can see this at all times, you will also need to take out some paper to take notes on.

  2. The Alamo Taxi Company charges an initial fee of $2.30 plus 21 Cents every mile. The Checker cab Company charges an initial cost of $1.00 plus 25 cents every mile.

  3. Write an equation representing what the Alamo Taxi Company charges.

  4. Alamo Taxi Company You are used to seeing equations written in the following way: y = mx + b What do the y, m, x, and b stand for? y = Dependent variable x = Independent variable m = slope (rate of change) b = y-intercept

  5. Alamo Taxi Company Things we need to know before we can write an equation: • What are our two variables? Which one is Independent and which one is Dependent? • What is the rate of change? (How much per mile) • What is the y-intercept? (The minimum amount charged)

  6. Alamo Taxi Company Now that we have all our information, let’s write our equation.

  11. How far can I go? $20.00 = .21x + 2.30 $20.00 – 2.30 = .21x + 2.30 –2.30 $17.70 = .21x $17.70/.21 = .21x/.21 84.29 = x We can travel 84.29 miles on our $20.00.

  12. I need to travel 15 miles to the airport, How much would the Checker Cab Company charge me?

  13. How much must I pay? y = .25 ( 15 miles) + 1.00 y = $3.75 + 1.00 y = $4.75 I would have to pay $4.75 to travel 15 miles.

  14. How Many Miles? • How many miles have I traveled if I would have to pay the same amount no matter what taxi I took?

  15. When is the Alamo Taxi Cab Company cheaper for me to take?

  16. When is the Checker Cab Company cheaper for me to take?

  17. YOUR HOMEWORK Your classwork/homework is going to be two worksheets. The first one is called Calculator Raffle. When you are done with that worksheet you need to pick up the 2nd one called Summer Reading. It is by the door. If you do not finish Calculator Raffle, you must still pick up Summer Reading and do it for homework. Both sheets are due next class time, when they will be discussed.
