Acids and Bases in Body • Metabolic- carbon dioxide, lactic acid, ketone bodies • Dietary- sodium and potassium salts of weak acids in fruits are metabolised and sodium or potassium bicarbonate remains- alkalies. • Removal- by lungs – carbon dioxide • Removal by kidney- hydrogen or bicarbonate. • GIT- vomiting and diarrhoea Respiratory Acid Base Balance
Bufers in Blood • Bicarbonate • Haemoglobin, oxy-haemoglibin [weak] • plasmaproteins Respiratory Acid Base Balance
Acidosis and Alkalosis • Normal pH- 7.4 ± .05. [viable range- 6.8 – 8.0] • Less- acidosis, more- alkalosis • Respiratory failure- accumulation of carbon dioxide leading to respiratory acidosis. [PCO2, HCO3 increased] • Hyperventilation- respiratory alkalosis. [PCO2, HCO3 decreased] • Metabolic acidosis- respiratory compensation- [PCO2, HCO3 decreased] • Metabolic alkalosis- respiratory compensation- [PCO2, HCO3 increased] • Renal compensation- delayed.
