  2. Basic Information • Auroras are displays of light in the sky during the night. They usually are a whitish- greenish color. They originate from the sun. They occur when sunspots and solar flares excite the thin gases in the atmosphere. They also occur when solar wind brings solar particles from space, and the earths magnetic field causes it to light up the sky. • An old Japanese myth was that every year the Japanese people would conceive gifted children under the auroras. • Now one of the most commonly thought of auroras the northern lights also known as the aurora borealis. Aurora means dawn, and borealis means northern.
