Describe the general attitude of the public toward the police. • They rate the police excellent or good in the community. • The level of confidence varies across racial and ethnic groups.
As with most services the public believes there is room for improvement. • Data clearly states that the public as a whole has more respect for the police and their honesty and ethical standards then it does for a variety of other occupations.
Statistics say that 43% of blacks and 41% of Hispanics say that the police treat all races unfairly. 80% of blacks and 66% of Hispanics say that the police brutality against minorities happens more often than occasionally.
32% of blacks 24% of Hispanics versus the 6% of whites say police brutality happens more often in their communities. • 42% of blacks 39% Hispanics versus 16% of whites say they concerned that they will be arrested for nothing.
When asked to rate the honesty and ethnical standards of the police only 13% of the general public rate the polices very high • While 43% rate them as “high” • 35% as average • 7% as low • 2% as very low
Although most of the public believes the police do a pretty good job, but there is also much room for improvement. • One way to improve the police is to employ better officers.
Summarize the steps in an effective police officer selection process. • To become a police officer you have to go through several different types of testing. • Some of the test are: recruitment, short applications, medical examination, oral interview.
Some of the qualities of a successful police officer are: motivation for a police career, flexibility, integrity, and honesty. • Ability to carry heavy responsibilities, and handle emergencies alone.
The ability to adapt thinking to technological thinking. • Taking the initiative- the ability to make the first move.
Being understanding of others, and having the desire to help others. • Being self assertive, thinking you do your job very well.
The maturity to remain calm and be the leader in an emotionally charged situation. • Physical strength and endurance to perform good duties.
A mature relationship with social authority. • Mental capacity to learn a wide variety of subjects quickly and correctly.
Identify factors that affect the exercise of police discretion and methods of limiting discretion. • Factors include: • Nature of the crime • Departmental policies,
The relationship between the victim and the offender. • The amount of evidence.
The preference of the victim. • The demeanor of the suspect.
Legitimacy of the victim. • The suspect socio-economic status
Methods of limiting police descretion • Closed supervision of police agents. • Department of directives and policies.
U.S supreme court decisions. • The threat of civil liability suits.
Describe two general ways law enforcement agencies can reduce stress job. • To employ stress management strategies • Discussing stressful events with colleagues. • Talking with Mental health professionals.
Regular exercise • Relaxation techniques • Healthy diet • Religious support
Enriched family support • Prayers (church) • Stress management involving spouses
Allowing officers to employ more hours and shirts discretely. • Allowing more officers more discretion on their shifts
Having excellent public safety equipment. • Weaponry • Vehicles • Body armor
Organizational change when needed • Job redesign that assigns unwanted or unnecessary tasks
