Background • You have booked a driver to take members of your family (wife/husband or kids) from home to a destination 500 miles away, across the UK • It is mid winter and snow is forecast • The driver has arranged to pick your passengers up early to take full advantage of the day light hours but the first and last part of the journey will be completed in darkness • The destination is 10 miles from the nearest ‘A Road’ and the last mile is an offroad track • The route will make use of as many motorways as possible but do not cover at least 25% of the way.
The day of the journey • It is 5.30 am • The weather outside is below freezing and it is foggy • The door bell rings • You answer the door to be greeted by a ‘spotty youth’ who is complaining that he only had a few hours sleep. He turns out to be your driver. • To add to your concerns the driver divulges that he had only passed his driving test last week on the third attempt
Your reaction • Do you let your family travel with the driver?
Your reasoning • What were the points that you considered in coming to your decision?
If the driver was a mortgage adviser….. • And the job was not to drive your family but the review your family’s circumstances and needs and help you through your next house move • What would you look for to ensure your adviser was the right person to do this job? • What should the adviser’s firm include in their pathway to competence to ensure the adviser is the right person to put in front of the customer?
