  1. Library Policy Ruby Huria Assistant Education Officer KVS, ZIET Mysore

Objective of the Library • The knowledge hub of the school. • Facilitate creation of new knowledge. • To facilitate optimal use of knowledge by all staff and students. • Encourage & foster reading habit among staff & students. • Effectively participate in the teaching learning programmes of the schools.

  3. To achieve these objectives library will undertake to : • Serve as the center of information & provide easy access to national & global knowledge to all students & staff. • Offer an inviting & attractive physical space with proper seating arrangements and other amenities. • Ensure that staff & students are treated with courtesy & are assisted in pursuit of knowledge. • Offer proactive services to all users. • Provide access to knowledge by proper display, categorization/classification of resource materials.

To achieve these objectives library will undertake to : • Help all the users to develop the skills to make optimum use of all the facilities. • Undertake activities to foster an interest in books and increase involvement in the library. • Improve the collection & services on a continuous basis in consultation with users/stakeholders. • Workout a programme in consultation with teachers for the effective use of all types of library materials. • To work effectively & efficiently by undertaking every activity in a professional manner.

General Guidelines for the library • Well rounded core collection including reference for the staff & students, several copies of text books, reference materials, encyclopedias, maps, atlas, and exclusive books. • General (fiction/nonfiction) books for regular issue to be made available. • Core collection supplement through networks, e-resources etc to provide better quantitative & qualitative services. • Constant renew & review of material to ensure the collections are relevant to the stake holders.

  6. General Guidelines for the libraryconti… • Weeding out books regularly with the approval of competent authority, at least once a year. • Categorising/classifying and indexing of books should be done. • The library should follow open access system.

  7. Size of Library Collection • The size of the Vidyalaya , subjects offered, covering project based activities, career guidance & counseling etc. • Books should be available both in English & Hindi. • Besides core collection, other general books put together should be at the rate of 5 books per students subject to a minimum of 500 books for newly opened schools. Low cast & relevant editions of classics & fiction should be preferred. • Some percentage of the total Vidyalaya budget to be marked for books purchased at continuous level. Out of the budget 50% should compulsorily be earmarked for elementary classes i.e up to class VIII.

  8. To encourage teacher participation in library a teacher may be allowed to submit name/list of books intended to be purchased amounting to Rs 500/. After approval of lib. Committee the amount of the book can be reimbursed to the teacher. • During Annual stock verification weeding out of the collection should be carried out. • For newly opened school a one-time budget would be provided for setting up the basic collection. • Besides books, libraries should subscribe to useful magazines, periodicals and journals.

  9. Library Services • Issue of books for home use- each student 2 books at a time for min one week. Pr. & Trs. 5 books for a fortnight. Failure to return leads to penalty of Rs. 1 per day. • Recall system for overdue books to be introduced. • Reissue allowed twice after first issue. • New books should not be issued for a month & to be displayed with new arrivals. • Only subject reference books to be issued with a successive holiday. No dictionaries & encyclopedia to be issued. • One set of text books is to be issued to the subject teachers for a session.

  10. On losing a book either it should be replaced or three times the price of the book to be provided. • Each user to be provided a card for the issue of books. • Magazines and periodicals to be issued for a week only. Latest two issues should be available in the library. Separate register to be maintained for the purpose. • Comfortable seating & proper lighting arrangements should be made.

  11. Each section 2 library periods per week. Classes VI to XII in library. For primary classes the teacher to supervise and give books from the class library to the students. • Two students from each section to assist the library activities. • Librarian will intermediate between user and collector. • Computer & Internet Access- Computer in library for storing information of collection, record of books issued, digitalized book and provide info on internet.

  12. Organization of the Library • Proper cataloging and classification of the collection to provide easy access and to keep account of books. • Computerization of the library needs to be carried out. • Books should be in lockable shelves but open access system should be followed. • Minimum 10 periodicals/journals/magazines to be subscribed & displayed. Old ones to be preserved at least for 6 months. • Display books jackets of new arrivals & interesting info.

  13. Activities to be conducted by the Librarian • Display of latest books, magazines & periodicals. • Book Reviews. • Book Fair at school & cluster level. • Career Guidance and Counseling Corner. • Themes for the week and display of related material. • Compilation of material from newspapers/magazines etc. for various topics like environment, science & technology etc. • Organization of Book Quiz. • Rewarding maximum book readers. • Establishing book clubs.

  14. The information to be displayed: • Total no. of books. • No of text books. • No of reference books. • No of general (fiction & no-fiction) books. • Subject wise list of books. • Class wise list of fiction & non-fiction available in the library. • No. of periodicals/magazines available along with their names and periodicity.

  15. Management of Library • Library Committee: Pr+3 trs.+2 students, meeting every month, budgetary provisions & ensure proper functioning • Suggest books for students & trs. • I-V class library. Class teacher to maintain register. • Selection of books by HM, Class Teachers & 2 students. Reissue of the next set after the books are read. • Class Tr. to monitor the record maintained by students of the books read.

  16. Monitoring & Evaluation of Collection & Services • No. of users. • No. & percentage of collection/ issued on any given day. • Number of books issued during a stated period. • Average books issued per user, per unit/ time. • Number of recommendations received for purchase of books per year. • Number of old books weeded out.
