  1. Barcelona, 25.-26.01.2007. Boys and Girls and Maths Dr. Mare Leino (Tallinn University, Estonia)

  2. HISTORY: • DURING 1995-1999 I INVESTIGATED A SUBJECT: “ PROBLEM CHILD AT ORDINARY SCHOOL” WHO WAS MOSTLY A BOY. THE RESEARCH METHOD THIS TIME WAS EDUCATIONAL ETHNOGRAPHY

  3. MARIKA VEISSON, VIIVE RUUS, ENE SARV, LOONE OTS, ANNELI VEISSON. TALLINN UNIVERSITY (ESTONIA) CO- AUTHORS:

  4. THE METHOD OF RESEARCH • QUESTIONNAIRE IN 2004, WHEN 3838 STUDENTS FROM ESTONIAN GENERAL EDUCATION SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN THE SURVEY.

  5. GIRLS AT ESTONIAN SCHOOL: • ARE TIRED • HAVE MORE HEAD AND STOMACH ACHES • WORK A LOT AND FEEL THAT THEY BELONG TO SCHOOL. • ARE STILL OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE.

  6. BOYS AT ESTONIAN SCHOOL • DON´T STUDY SO EAGERLY • FEEL MORE BORED AT SCHOOL COMPARED TO GIRLS. • ARE SURE THAT THEY CAN COPE AFTER SCHOOL VERY WELL.

  7. SOME QUESTIONS WERE ABOUT FAVORITE SUBJECTS AS WELL.

  8. ABOUT THE FAVOITE SUBJECTS • ALL CHILDREN AGED 13-18 Y. NAMED MAXIMAL 5 FAVORITE SUBJECTS: • 1594 GIRLS WROTE 7365 TIMES • 1354 BOYS WROTE 6064 TIMES

  9. FOR 47,3% GIRLS ONE OF FAVOURITE SUBJECTS WAS MATHS • 68,3% OF BOYS NAMED ONE OF FAVORITE SUBJECTS PHYSICAL EDUCATION (TRAINING)

  10. MATHEMATIC WAS 10,2% OF ALL PREFERENCES OF GIRLS. • TRAINING/PHYSICAL EDUCATION WAS 15,3% OF ALL PREFERENCES OF BOYS.

  11. THE TOP-LIST OF SUBJECTS FOR GIRLS • MATHS (47%) • SPORT (41%) • ENGLISH (40%) • BIOLOGY (38%), • ESTONIAN LANGUAGE (34%) • CHEMISTRY (13%) ON 14.PLACE • PHYSIC (8%) ON THE 17. PLACE

  12. THE TOP-LIST OF SUBJECTS FOR BOYS: • SPORT (68%) • MATHS (48%) • MANUAL TRAINING (33%) • HISTORY (31%) • English (31%) • Physic (16%) on 10. place • Chemistry (11%) on 15. place

  13. TOP LIST FOR 17-18. y. Old students: • MATHS (16%) • ENGLISH (11%) • LITERATURE (11%)

  14. THE TOP-LIST FOR 13-14 Y. OLD STUDENT • PHYSICAL EDUCATION (21%) • MATHS (12%) • MANUAL TRAINING (8%)

  15. NATIONALITY • FOR ESTONIANS FAVORITE SUBJECTS WERE: • PHYSICAL EDUCATION (21%), MATHS ( 12%) AND ENGLISH (8%)

  16. FOR RUSSIANS FAVORITE SUBJECTS WERE: • MATHS (16%), PHYSICAL EDUCATION (16%) AND COMPUTER (10%).

  17. MATHS IS THE FAVORITE • MATHS IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR GIRLS IN SMALL TOWNS AND IN COUNTRY SIDE: • MATHS IS THE FAVORITE SUBJECT NR. 1 FOR 17% GIRLS OF COUNTRY SIDE AND FOR 10% BOYS OF COUNTRY SIDE.

  18. ??? WHY ??? • WE ARE GOING TO INVESTIGATE THIS QUESTION BY USING EDUCATIONAL ETHNOGRAPHY DURING THIS YEAR (2007).

  19. WE THINK THAT OUR GIRLS ARE ACADEMICALLY SO EAGER BECAUSE THEY HOPE TO COPE BETTER IN THE MAN-CENTERED POST-SOVIET SOCIETY. • SOVIET SCHOOL WAS VERY ACADEMICAL, AND THIS IS NOT CHANGED VERY MUCH TILL NOW.

  20. EDUCATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LIFE-BELT AND/OR INSURANCE FOR OUR GIRLS´ FUTURE.

  21. ACCORDING TO STATISTICAL OFFICE OF ESTONIA • IN 2003 THERE WERE 205 WOMEN PER 100 MEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION. • IN 1994 THE FIGURE WAS STILL 108.

  22. APPARENTLY ESTONIAN MEN ARE ABLE TO FIND JOBS AND RECOGNITION ALSO WITH LOWER EDUCATION LEVELS.

  23. THIS MAKES ONE TO THINK ABOUT HIDDEN GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN THE LABOUR MARKET. (AND NOT ONLY IN ESTONIA, BUT ACCORDING TO PROF. ELINA LAHELMA THIS IS THE CASE FOR EXAMPLE IN FINLAND AS WELL.)

  24. FOR WOMEN IN ESTONIA THE BEST QUARANTY FOR NORMAL LIFE IS EDUCATION – AT LEAST THEY SEEM TO HOPE SO. AND MATHS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS HOPE.
