Eddie Eddie is an able student with quite an inclination for science. He would like use this either in working with children and/or working in health. He attends a comprehensive school. 2
Additional and/or Specialist learning Extended Project Work experience An investigation into the public health data in the local community on obesity and from the findings, a projection of the likely impact of a healthy eating campaign in the college on students and staff. A placement in the smoking cessation clinic, where Eddie was able to consider the effects of motivation on health. GCE A level in Chemistry Progression route: Having gained experience of carrying out systematic research and gained ideas about psychology and motivation, Eddie plans to study for a BSc in Dietetics. Edward Edward is an able student, with an interest in working with children. He attends a comprehensive school in central London. He would like to become a primary school teacher. 5
Additional and/or Specialist learning Extended Project Work experience An investigation into the use of synthetic phonics for teaching children to read, incorporating a history of their use, the controversy of the approach, and Edward’s own experiences in helping to teach infant school children to read. Volunteer helper with Beaver (age 6-8) and Cub (age 9-11) Scouts; working at the Hutchinson Foundation to help with fundraising and publicity; a placement as a classroom assistant at an inner-London primary school. GCE A level in Spanish And Level 3 Award in Playwork for Early Years and Child Care Workers Progression route: Edward plans to study for a BA in Childhood Studies. He hopes to immediately go on to a PGCE in Primary Education, so that he can start his teacher training in an inner-city school. Evie Evie is a hard-working student, but is not entirely academic. She is interested in becoming a social worker or nurse, and attends a science college. 8
Additional and/or Specialist learning Extended Project Work experience An investigation into the biology of ageing and the social implications of an ageing population in rural areas. Placement as a volunteer at an inpatient care unit; shadowing social workers (working with at a county council) in non-confidential situations. GCE A level in Human Biology Progression route: Evie now intends to apply for a place to study for a BSc in Nursing (Adult). Christos Christos attends an inner-city comprehensive. He is a hard-working student who likes hands-on learning. He is fascinated by human behaviour and thinks he might like to become a professional psychologist. 11
Additional and/or Specialist learning Extended Project Work experience A SHD Diploma teamwork project plan for a local infant school's Healthy Eating initiative. Having observed groups of infants over half a term and read about language and learning, Christos contributed a "Language and Learning" plan to help persuade the children to enjoy eating fruit and vegetables. In his presentation to the school's governors, he persuaded them that such a plan warranted development and piloting. A placement in the local infants school. GCE A level in Human Biology And GCE A level in Psychology Progression route: Christos' Diploma course has got him really interested in Applied Psychology but also in the area of Social Policy. Ben Ben is a conscientious student who attends a rural comprehensive and has an interest in criminology. At present he is unclear as to his future career, but is considering entering the Police service or Scenes of Crime work. 14
Additional and/or Specialist learning Extended Project Work experience An investigation into the impact of sport in alleviating youth crime within a rural area. Placement with the Youth Offending Team in his local town. Ben is a very good footballer and captains his village side and also helps with coaching the under-13 side. GCE A level in Sociology And GCE AS level in Biology Progression route: Ben's work experience and interest in sport has prompted him to consider undertaking a BA in Applied Criminology with Sport or alternatively Applied Criminology with Forensic Investigation. Ewan Ewan is a determined young man. He has done reasonably well in his GCSEs, given that his inner-city comprehensive is located in a challenging area. He is exasperated but deeply interested by the social problems in his community. He helps out with the local Boys Brigade and would like to get involved in youth work in some way. But first he is intent on getting a degree. 17
Additional and/or Specialist learning Extended Project Work experience A dissertation on "The Effects of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on a Local Community", including desk research and interviews with local community workers and representatives. A placement with a community project helping to set up a music studio for local young people. GCE A level in Sociology Progression route: Ewan has gained real insight into how agencies work together. His own interaction with his community led him to want to work in community support or youth justice. The study skills he has developed have made him intent on looking for work in one of these areas while studying for a Foundation Degree in Community Justice.
