Sessions Aims and Objectives. Facilitate the setting up of a panel that will contribute to: • A reduction in unnecessary custodial/secure remands; • Early identification of issues for custodial/secure remands; • An increased number of diversions to a appropriate community alternative.
Three Types of Custodial/Secure Remand Panels • Monthly Review Meeting • Custodial/secure remand case are reviewed historically on a monthly basis • Weekly Planning Review • Consider cases that are appearing in court that week to ensure alternatives to custody are being offered where appropriate • Continuous Gate-Keeping Processes • Embedded gate-keeping & QA in day to day YOT practice
Key Elements • Pre or Post custodial cases reviewed • Membership of panel. • Terms of Reference (ToR) for panel • How often, where and when it will meet • What will be presented to the panel • Power of recommendations / post meeting actions
Exercise Split into 3 Groups. Take one of the models of custody panels and: • Discuss the advantages • Discuss the disadvantages • Discuss how it would work in ………. Be prepared to feedback your findings with the rest of the group.
Next Steps • Identify the most appropriate model for your YOT. • Set up the panel: • Appropriate membership • ToR • Priority etc. • Set a date to review the benefits.
