Joseph & Prakken (ICAIL-09) • Coherence-driven argumentation to norm consensus • Which norms best regulate a certain domain? • Logic: Thagard’s theory of coherence • Dialogue: dialogue system for building coherence networks
Theory-building dialogues • Dialogue moves operate on some inferential theory • Promotes relevance • Each move should improve speaker’s position • Promotes relevance • Turn shifts as soon as speaker has the upper hand • Promotes efficiency and fairness
Could this have been modelled as: • Abstract argumentation? Maybe: • Formulate argument schemes • Will be similar to schemes for action selection • Represent them as defeasible inference rules in (E)-ASPIC • Calculate arguments and defeat • Deductive argumentation? No.
Should this have been modelled as argumentation-based inference? • No: • Sometimes argumentation dialogues build theories that are not argument frameworks • Sometimes these theories combine several forms of reasoning
Open problems • What other inferential structures are relevant? • Including combinations • My JELIA 2008 paper • How can dialogue systems presupposing these structures be defined? • Some guidelines given • …
