  1. AIMS OF STUDY To describe the demographics of attendees of nurse-clinician led smoking cessation clinic at a University-affiliated acute hospital. To determine quit rate at 1 year and to detect any gender differences. CONCLUSION Overall quit rate of 35.3% is achieved at 1 year, male smokers = 35.1% & female smokers = 36% Besides the level of education that was significant between male and female smokers, no other gender differences were identified Demographic of Attendees of Smoking Cessation Clinic : Gender differences? Yee Mun Choo RNS*, Lathy Prabhakaran RNS*, Lee Pyng MD** Department of Nursing*, & Respiratory Medicine**, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore RESULTS Ethnic Distribution • Background: • Cigarette Smoking is the main cause of: • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease • Lung Cancer • Ischaemic Heart Disease • Low birth weight babies • Benefits of Smoking Cessation • Increase Survival in COPD patients • Reduce risk of Lung Cancer by > 90% • Reduce risk of AMI by 30% • Reduce incidence of LBW babies by 25% • Smoking Cessation Counseling • Smoking cessation counseling provided by a physician is the most cost-effective intervention. • A few minutes of advice from healthcare professionals gives a 5% quit smoking rate • METHODOLOGY • Demographics, smoking characteristics, treatment and outcome of smokers followed at 3,6 and 12 months from May 1999 to May 2002 were collected and analyzed • Comparisons between male and female smokers were performed with the Chi-square test to detect gender differences • P  0.05 was considered significant P =0.48 Martial Status P = 0.51 No of cigarettes per day P = 0.4 Years of Smoking • GENERAL RESULTS • A total of 400 smokers attended the clinic • Mean age = 48.8  17.7 years • Male : Female ratio = 7:1 • 74.5 % Chinese, 13.5% Malay, 10% Indian • Majority (74.4%) of attendees were married • Mean smoking history = 30.7  17.1 years P = 0.35 Male Female Demographic Profile Quit Rate at 1 year Race Gender P = 0.30 Male Female Level of Education Base = 400 Source of Referral Educational Level Secondary & Below A level & Above Nil Base = 400
