  1. It’s Time to Get Online! • 79% of adult Americans use the Internet. • 78% of Internet users conduct product research online. • 57% of businesses have acquired a customer through their blog. • 41% of B2B companies and 67% of B2C companies have acquired a customer through Facebook. • Companies that blog get 55% more web traffic. • 10.3 billion searches are conducted every month on Google. • 70% of the links search users click on are organic – not paid. • 1/3 of US consumers spend three or more hours online every day. • More than half of all Internet users read blogs at least monthly. Sources: Pew Research and HubSpot

  2. Being Online in no Longer Sufficient • Growing percentage of businesses are now online • Harder to stand out in a crowd • Growing number of businesses are blogging • Search engines give more weight to fresh content than to older content • If you don’t update frequently, your site will drop in search result ranking • Growing number of businesses are utilizing SEO • Not a mystery, anyone can do it, no need for a “pro”

  3. The Competition is Gaining -- Examples Bizelle.com sells the Sulu Collection tunics. As of November, 2011, it accounted for the 8 of the first 9 links on the Google search results. See results as of January 30, 2012 …

  4. The Competition is Gaining -- Examples Kelley’s Automotive Repair always “owned” the search results for “fountain hills auto repair”. Now 2 competitors are in the 2nd and 3rd spots because they are aggressively blogging for fresh content and SEO.

  5. Online Tools – the Low Hanging Fruit • Your Own Website • You will get the most use out of your own site • Can post frequently using targeted words for good SEO • The FLAG Site • For those of you with no web presence, it is imperative that you use the FLAG site in order to be found • Your competitors are likely online • Fewer people use old-time resources such as the yellow pages to find products and services • For those of you with a site, FLAG can be a strong booster if everyone participates actively • Coupons and events for FH – over time consistently good offers and timely news will gain followers for the site and its members

  6. The FLAG Site is an Underused Resource • In 2011, searches for member business categories often had 1 or more links to the FLAG site on the first page • Being on the first page of search is key • Flag site has member’s contact information • Members without a website were being found via their presence on the FLAG site • In 2012, this is no longer the case • Google prioritizes sites with fresh content • Google also prioritizes sites with lots of back-links • SEO has become more common, so it is highly likely that more of your competitors are online than before and many are using SEO to be found • Your site/your data on the FLAG site is “demoted” in the search results

  7. FHLEADS.COM – the Basics • The site is made up of pages and posts • Pages contain relatively static information • Home, Members, Contact • Lauren and Adrian can maintain these pages • Posts are akin to articles, and they contain the bulk of the value and content of the site • Each member has a category that they “own” • The more frequently new posts are added to the site, the better the site overall will do in searches • You can use posts to offer coupons or tell people about upcoming events

  8. How To Write a Post • You can go to www.fhleads.com to find extensive instructions on how to publish a post on the FLAG site • The last link on the right-hand side-bar is entitled “uncategorized” • Click on that link and you will see an article entitled “How to Make a WordPress Blog Post” with step-by-step instructions • http://fountainhillsleads.com/flag-member-instructions/

  9. Writing a Blog Post – Best Practices • Keep it short and informative • The information in the first line should contain key words that will help you be found • Insert key words and phrases as often as feasible • Think of one or two searches that someone searching for your business would use, and those search terms should be your key phrases • The more specific, the better ie: “Fountain Hills fashion” is better than “chic fashion”, since “chic fashion” is so general that you will be competing against a larger pool of people

  10. Writing a Blog Post – Best Practices cont … • Add links • Links to your site or other FLAG sites help your other sites to do better in search rankings • Add photos when possible • Each of your photos can be tagged with key words to help your business be found • This makes the posts more attractive and interesting

  11. Other Uses of FLAG Site • To email FLAG • Go to “Contact” page on fhleads.com • To add an event to the FLAG calendar online • Log in to fountainhillsleads.com • Go to “dashboard” • Go to “events calendar” – at bottom on left-hand side • Click “add event” • Instructions are clear • Don’t forget to click “add event” button when you are done – if you forget, the event will not be added • Check your work online

  12. Events Calendar

  13. Other Uses of FLAG Site • Support each others’ businesses via testimonials • Write a post saying something good about another member’s business, and make sure to put it in that member’s category • If everyone puts up coupons regularly, we can create a category called “Coupons” • With proper awareness (an article in the FH Times, perhaps), people will start to visit the site regularly if there is regular value

  14. Advanced Topics • Mobile is the new web • A growing number of people search for products and services via mobile phone • Easy access to location, hours and contact information is vital for mobile users • Video is hugely important • If you have videos on youtube that you would like to add to the site, see us after the meeting for a quick “how to” • Youtube is the second largest search engine after Google • Many younger people want video, not text

  15. Advanced Topics cont … • Analytics help you know who is coming to your site and why …

  16. Advanced Topics cont … • Understand which searches get people to your site …

  17. Advanced Topics cont … • Are you reaching the right people?
