Thriller • A thriller films which contains build-up and suspense, what is based around a fearful, exciting plot. Often based around crime and mystery. • It is a very diverse genre. It contains films what are different, yet they’re all realistic and could happen. • There are many well-known thriller films, such as:The Silence Of The LambsThe Bourne SeriesShutter IslandSaw Series
Characters • The characters what are stereotypically used in a thriller films are:Detectives – who tend to be the ‘heroes'’Agents, police and marshals.The ‘bad guys’ – foreigner or disfigured.Assassins. • The protagonist of the film tends to have a back story of their life - a reasoning as to why they’re doing the job.
Props • Thriller films contain many props. The props used in the film depend on the setting and the storyline. For example, if the film is aimed at a futuristic approach, props would include: hi-tech phones, computers and gadgets. Settings/Locations • In thriller films the location can vary drastically. Ranging from an island in the middle of nowhere, to the streets of a well-known, busy city. • Also, the time is sometimes changed and set back in time to the previous century e.g. Shutter Island, or set forward in time, for example Minority Report.
Music/Sound Effects • As Thriller films contain a lot of escalating conflict between characters, and tension and suspense is key. So adding in sound effects and music what add to tension and build up suspense is important in this genre. • As action sequences are often used in the thriller genre, the sound of gunshots and body punches are also added to give the film more of a realistic feel. • Jaws is famously known for it’s tense build up of music when the shark is approaching.
Lighting • The lighting of a Thriller film varies accordingly to the location. For example, if lighting is dark and dim, the location and setting is more than likely to be a rainy, dull day and set on a island in the middle of nowhere. Where as if the lighting is bright, the film is most likely to be set in a heavily, populated city.
