  2. Characterization • Characterization is the process by which the author reveals the personality of the character. • Two types of characterization: • Direct Characterization • Indirect Characterization

Direct Characterization • Direct characterizationtells the audience what the personality of the character is. • “The patient boy and quiet girl were well mannered and never disobeyed their mother.” • The author directly tells the personality of both children: • The boy is “patient” • The girl is “quiet”

  4. Indirect Characterization • Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of the character. • There are five methods of indirect characterization (Steal): • Speech • Thoughts • Effect on others • Actions • Looks

  5. Indirect Characterization • Speech. What does the character say? How does the character speak? • Thoughts. What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts or feelings? • Effect on others toward the character. What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters think and behave in reaction to the character? • Actions.What does the character do? How does the character behave? • Looks.What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

  6. Assignment • Think about a character from a story we’ve read so far this year. • Identify one example of direct characterization • Identify one example of each of the methods of indirect characterization.
