  2. Oil Painting Mediums  Oil Painting Mediums alter the working properties of paint. Although called “mediums,” mediums typically are composed of a binder and sometimes a solvent. Additives, on the other hand, consist of solvents, oils, waxes, resins, extender pigments and other substances that are used to change the consistency of paint. Here you will find oil painting additives (or as we prefer to call them “amendments”) made by Natural Pigments.

  3. Oleogel Oleogel is a thixotropic painting medium made with linseed oil and pyrogenic silica. Oleogel is a clear pale amber gel that adds transparency and thixotropic body to oil, resin-oil or alkyd paint. Add directly to your paint to give it transparency without thinning its consistency. Add pigments or extenders to thicken it for creating impasto effects that do not sink in.

  4. Impasto Medium Impasto Medium is an oil painting medium of finely ground calcite, silica and bentonite in pale linseed oil. Use it to extend paint without altering the consistency, making oil colors 'short' and buttery for impastos. Stiffer than Velázquez Medium, this putty-like medium makes colors slightly transparent while allowing you to build impasted, thick applications of paint.

  5. Impasto Putty Impasto Putty is an oil painting medium of finely ground calcite, barite and bentonite in bodied linseed oil. Use it to extend paint without altering the consistency, making oil colors 'short' and buttery for impastos. Stiffer than Impasto Medium and Velázquez Medium, this putty makes colors slightly transparent while allowing you to build impasted, thick applications of paint.

  6. Balsam Essential Oil Medium Add a small amount of Balsam Essential Oil Medium to your paint to make it brush out more easily, and dry more quickly. Balsam Essential Oil Medium can be thinned with spike oil or turpentine. Mixed directly into the paint on the palette, it gives colors a flowing consistency yet dries to a satin to gloss finish, depending upon the amount used. Balsam Essential Oil Medium smells wonderful.

  7. Rublev Colours Oil Mediums As the oils dry naturally, containing no driers or resins, they may be used with confidence as to their future behaviour and longevity. The mediums prepared with spike oil dry the slowest; the medium with odorless mineral spirits dries next rapidly; while that prepared with turpentine dries the fastest. Use as a painting medium, for "oiling out" to keep oil colors fresh and as a safe drying oil mixed with oil colors on the palette.

  8. Rublesol Lite Rublesol Lite is a medium evaporating, low-odor mineral spirits. It evaporates much more slowly than turpentine and slower than odorless mineral spirits allowing more open time and prolonged work. It also makes colors more matte upon drying. Rublesol Lite evaporates completely and leaves no residue. The solvent is highly refined and has very low levels of impurities—such as sulfur, olefins, and benzene. The total aromatic content is less than 1%.

  9. Linseed Oil Sampler The use of oleoresinous mediums in oil painting can sometimes overly complicate the paint film and lead to disastrous, if not unexpected results. Rublev Colours offers alternatives to oleoresinous mediums for painting by offering a sampler of four linseed oil products (2 fluid ounces each) to amend oil colors and to prepare emulsions in tempera.

  10. Health and Safety There are no acute or known chronic health hazards associated with the anticipated use of this product (most chemicals are not fully tested for chronic toxicity). Always protect yourself against potentially unknown chronic hazards of this and other chemical products by keeping them out of your body. Do this by avoiding ingestion, excessive skin contact, and inhalation of spraying mists, sanding dusts and vapors from heating. Conforms to ASTM D-4236.
