The 1st Continental Congress • In Sept. 1774 delegates from the colonies gathered in Philadelphia to discuss the future of the colonies • Delegates include: Samuel Adams, John Adams, Patrick Henry, and George Washington • Two main outcomes of the 1st Continental Congress: • The Colonies Unite • “The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, and New Englanders are no more… I am not a Virginian, but an American” – Patrick Henry • They ask England to repeal all acts passed since 1763
Britain Sends Troops • Militia began to prepare through out the colonies, but especially in New England • Militia who claimed to be prepared at a minutes notice referred to themselves as Minutemen • The King felt that rebellion was imminent and commanded British General Thomas Gage to take all weapons from the militia starting with Concord
Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride • General Gage sends 700 troops to leave Boston and to destroy or seize any militia weapons • Paul Revere hears of this activity within Boston and rides through the night to warn the militia in Lexington and Concord that “The British are coming!” • Samuel Adams is one of the many who are excited by this news!!!
Lexington • British troops marched through the night intending to take Militia weapons before they could be used • At dawn the British approach Lexington and find a group of 70 militia men • No one knows who fired the 1st shot, but in the end 8 minutemen lay dead • The British would march onto Concord to discover a majority of the militia weapons had been moved
Concord • Upon leaving Concord British troops encounter a group of Minutemen at the North Bridge • Militiamen were more prepared for this battle and quickly fired upon the British • This time the British are forced to retreat • On the march back to Boston minutemen hid alongside the road and fired as the British retreated killing 73 Redcoats and wounding many more
