News about SOLEIL JM FILHOL On behalf of the Accelerators and Sources Division • Beamlines • Operation in 2008 • Lifetime • RF Cryomodule N°2 • Insertion Devices • Position stability • Current increase • Top-up preparation
18 Beamlines are taking beam 10 from IDs, 6 from BM + 2 IR
Beamlines Status • 12 beamlines are open to External Users (via PRC) • 3 are under commissioning • 3 are installing equipments after radiation control of hutches • 4 have been validated for injection with opened FE • + 2 new beamlines to be validated in December and January (RP) • + 6 beamlines to come in 2009-2011 =>26 Beamlines : 16 from IDs, 6 from BM + 2 IR
Beamlines Status Number of users welcomed at SOLEIL in 2008 (January-December): 1023 users
3rd call: Status report (22/09/08) Beamtime allocation period: 1st semester 2009 set • 2009 • Requested number of shifts: 4630 shifts • Submitted proposals : 316 (including 10 BAGs proposals, with a total of 52 projects) * Breakdown by origin of proposals: France: 239 EU countries: 65 Non EU countries: 12 BBUS/FF – November, 2008
Machine Operation Good availability of the beam : 93.8% in 2007 (2 640 hours del.) 95.4% in 2008 (3 210 hours del. over 3 364 h as of Nov. 15)
Machine Operation Mean time Between Failures : 30 hours over 2008
Beam Current Since March 08, 250 mA is delivered to the beamlines And the BL Radiation tests are performed at 300 mA Current (mA) Integrated current (A.h)
Machine Operation • Filling mode : • ¾ of the ring (312 bunches) 250 mA, coupling < 1% • Uniform filling (4/4 , 416 bunches) 250 mA, coupling < 1% • 8 bunch mode 60 mA, coupling 6% • Hybrid mode to be delivered soon ¾ of the ring + 1 SB • Bunch by bunch transverse feedback in both planes • Slow orbit feedback replaced by fast orbit feedback • 2, 3 or 4 RF cavities, providing 2.5 to 3 MV
Delivered on May 20, just at the start of the 5 week shutdown dedicated to its installation. The 2nd RF cryomodule
The 2nd RF cryomodule • Conditioning of the cavity (RF + beam) • Cavity #3 OK up to 150 kW CW (quite rapid and easy) • Cavity #4 more difficult: 60 kW CW (RF only) • then very hard point met at 70 kW. Not yet fixed. • Major problem with tuning system (cold) • Happens first on Cavity #4 : stuck away from resonance • Then occurs on Cavity #3 : stuck nearly on resonance (2 weeks ago) • working point could be found to delivered 250 mA. • The cryomodule is not yet accepted ! • The tests to raise the current to 500 mA are suspended
Insertion Devices 15 insertions in place : 4 electromagnetic, 4 In-vac, 7 APPLEII + 2 ready waiting for installation (1 APPLEII, 1 In-vac) 8 insertions to build : 3 In-vac + 4 APPLEII + WSV50 + EMPHU
Insertion Devices In-vac undulators : Pb with heating/outgassing of the tapers => new design to be validated in January 400 mA in ¾ fill 400 mA in full fill
Insertion Devices In-vac undulators : The influence of the longitudinal RF masks ? 400 mA in ¾ fill 400 mA in full fill
Lifetime The influence of the ID settings
Lifetime Unexplained bumps (reproducible from decay to decay !)
Beam position stability Horizontal plane Vertical plane
Beam position stability Effect of electromagnetic undulator (cycling)
23 h 12.5 h 10 h 9.6 h
Preparatory work towards « top-up » • Réduction of perturbations on stored beam : • Extra shielding around active septum and vaccum vessels (eddy currents) • Work on kicker pulse identity • Compensation loop in the booster to minimize 3 Hz pertrubation • difficult to go below 100/150 microns
Preparatory work towards « top-up » Lifetime = 14h 1 pulse 0.8mA injected every 2mn 20sec I=300.3 mA +/- 0.5 mA => 0.3% Current stability
Steps towards top-up at 500 mA • Modifications of PSS systems and requalification (in May 08) • Validation of 500 mA operation (early 2009) on the machine • Radiation control on each beamline optical hutch (2009) • Injection with open front-end on each validated beamline • Top-up operation will start once all beamlines are validated • and able to receive 400 or 500 mA on first optical components.
