What Are Fossil Fuels? Fossil fuels are a natural fuel such as coal or gas. Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons ( it is a compound of hydrogen and carbon) such as oil, and they are sourced from organic remains of prehistoric organisms. They are fuels because when they are burnt they release energy. After millions of years, the materials are dug up to be used to cook the food that we eat today.
How Were Fossil Fuels Formed? They were formed from prehistoric plants and animals that live millions of years ago. Fossil Fuels were once alive. They land masses we live on today were just forming. There were swamps and bogs everywhere. Tiny one celled organisms called protoplankton floated in the ocean. When the organisms died they decomposed and became buried under layers and layers of mud, rock and sand. Eventually hundreds of feet of Earth covered them.
Different Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels, like gas and oil, are used to fuel cars and airplanes, power electricity plants and heat our homes. The fact is, a huge number of products that we use everyday, wouldn’t be available without the oil and gas extracted.
