Pre-Lab Part I: Define the following terms: • Measurement • Matter • Length • Volume • Mass • Temperature • Density • Glassware
Pre-Lab Part II: Complete the following chart:
Pre-Lab Part III: Answer the following: • What advantage does the International System of Units (SI) have over the English system? • Explain the difference between mass and weight. • Why is some laboratory equipment made of porcelain instead of glass? • Draw three examples of safety symbols and explain their meaning.
Laboratory Equipment Lab Guide No. 1
Objectives • Identify standard laboratory equipment • Explain standard use of laboratory equipment
Beaker • measures volume • used as a container (like a cup) • may be heated • common sizes: 100, 250, 400 mL
Erlenmeyer Flask • measures volume • used to heat and store liquids • common sizes: 125, 250, 500 mL • The bottom is wider than the top so it will heat quicker because of the greater surface area exposed to the heat.
Graduated Cylinder • used to make accurate measurements of liquid volumes • meniscus
Test Tubes • used to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals
Pipet (Pipette) • used for moving small amounts of liquid from place to place
Buret (Burette) • used to dispense determined amounts of liquids in experiments • marked with a milliliter scale • pinch clamp at the bottom
Funnel • used to target liquids into any container so they will not be lost or spilled • can be used with filter paper
Watch Glass • used to hold solids when being weighed or transported • should never be heated
Volumetric Flask • used to measure one specific volume (very accurate) • mostly used in mixing solutions where a one liter or one half a liter is needed
Florence Flask • used as a container to hold liquids • has a round bottom with a single long neck • designed for uniform heating and ease of swirling
Stirring Rod (To stir means to mix around) • used to stir things • usually made of glass.
Evaporating Dish • porcelain • used to heat and evaporate liquids
Crucible • Crucibles are used to heat small quantities to very high temperatures.
Mortar and Pestle • used to crush (grind) solids into powders for experiments, usually to better dissolve the solids.
Test Tube Holder • used to hold test tubes when they are hot and untouchable
Tongs • used to hold many different things such as flasks, crucibles, and evaporating dishes when they are hot
Clamps • attached to the ring stand • used to hold a large test tube or flask
Spatula • useful for transferring small amounts of solids
Iron Ring • Used to fasten to the ring stand as a support for different equipment.
Ring Stand • used to hold items being heated
Stoppers • come in many different sizes • the sizes are from 0 to 8. • can have holes for thermometers and for other probes that may be used
