THE QUICK GUIDE TO ENGLISH RESUME & COVER LETTER Instructor: Melanie Lee
RESUME or CURRICULUM VITAE (CV)? • Resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. A goal of resume writing is to be brief and concise since, at best, the resume reader will spend a minute or so reviewing your qualifications. • Curriculum Vitae commonly referred to as CV, is a longer (two or more pages), more detailed than resume. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. ※ The primary differences between resume and curriculum vitae are the length, the content and the purpose. 1. Keep your resume short and concise 2. Don’t lie or exaggerate 3. Write it yourself as much as possible 4. Get someone else to review your resume for typographical, grammatical or punctuation errors GENERAL TIPS ON RESUME WRITING RESUME APPEARANCE • Use white or light-colored paper • Recommend : Capital Letter, Times New Roman or Arial, Helvetica Fonts • OK : Italics, Bold, Shadow • Unacceptable : Courier Fonts, Underline • No Photo unless requested
TYPES OF RESUME 1. Chronological Resume It starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it's easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them. 2. Functional Resume* It focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by newly graduated students and people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history. 3. Combination Resume It lists your skills and experience first. Your employment history is listed next. With this type of resume you can highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and also provide the chronological work history that employers prefer. SAMPLE COVER LETTER - 1 Jennifer Park #1-202 SkyView APT Gurodong Gurogu Seoul Mobile: 011 2345 6789 E-mail: melanie@victory.com 15 Sept 2007 Mr. Edward Baxter Manager, Human Resources Division DEFG Pty. Ltd 12th Fl., Blue Tower Building Daechidong Kangnamgu, Seoul Dear Mr. Baxter, My proven track record of successfully performing complex analyses on various corporations makes me an ideal candidate for the Analyst opportunity that you listed through the EFG University Career Services Office. You specify that you are looking for someone with leadership, quantitative, analytical and communication skills. Last summer, I was given the opportunity to intern at First Real Estate Corporation. I assisted staff with problems arising from the misinterpretation of leases to miscalculation of rent schedules. As a result, I played an active role within the group and helped them to solve these issues. This process involved using the quantitative and analytical skills that I acquired through actively participating in coursework for my Business-Economics major. My ability to work well as part of team also related to my success within this group. These attributes, combined with my enthusiasm to learn, were essential to my contributions and success during this internship. I look forward to discussing the position with you in more detail. I will call next week to see if you agree that my qualifications seem to be a match for the position. If so, I hope to schedule an interview at a mutually convenient time. Thank you for your consideration. Yours sincerely, Jennifer Park
SAMPLE COVER LETTER - 2 15 Sept 2007 Judith Anderson Street, City, State, Zip Phone: 555-555-5555 Mobile: 555-666-6666 E-mail@email.com Mr. John Smith Director, Human Resources Centre ABC University 1234 Main Street New York NY 1205 Dear Mr. Smith, I am writing in reply to the classified ad seeking to fill the position of Graduate Student Advisor for the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program. I have been awarded the degree of Master of Arts from XXXX so I understand the need for academic advisement and program planning in a nontraditional higher education environment. I have also experienced, first-hand, the comforting effect of being able to contact an adviser who genuinely cares for the success of students. During my career as an electrician I was elected Chairman of the Executive Board which sat as the union’s representatives to the apprenticeship advisory board. In this capacity I was able to be an effective advisor to apprentices who were experiencing scholastic problems which threatened their future in the industry; especially to older apprentices who were seeking a career change and had problems adjusting to the obligations of work, school and family life. I believe my educational background in nontraditional post-graduate education and my work related duties of counseling and advising students enrolled in learning programs qualifies me for consideration for the position of Graduate Student Advisor. Thank you for your time and consideration. I would welcome the opportunity to personally discuss my potential contributions to your university with you. I can be contacted on my mobile on 011 000 0000. I look forward to your reply. Yours sincerely, Judith Anderson
