  2. TSM for Copy Services Content • Extended snapshot support to applications on Windows • Add VSS snapshot support for MS Exchange Server • Support snapshot providers for MS Exchange VSS • Software snapshots through VSS • Support devices that implement VSS provider interface • It is a new product • Driven by (and also prerequisite) IBM TSM for Mail (DP for MS EX) • MS-SQL Support planned for TSM V5.5 • IMR for Exchange planned for TSM V5.5 • FS-Backup planned for TSM V6.01

  3. What is VSS ? • The Volume Shadow Copy Service(VSS) provided with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is an enhanced Storage Management feature that provides a framework and an API that enables the creation of consistent point-in-time copies of data known as shadow copies. • The VSS service enables the interoperability of third-party storage management programs, business programs, and hardware providers in order to create and manage shadow copies. • Several features in Windows Server 2003 already use the Volume Shadow Copy Service, such as Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and Backup.

  4. VSS Roles • Requestors • Requestors are any applications using the VSS API • Backup/Recovery application, such as TSM for Mail or TSM B/A Client • Writers • Applications or services that store persistent information on disk and that cooperate with providers and requestors through the shadow copy interface • Application (e.g. SQL Server, MS Exchange, …) • Providers • Manage running volumes and create the shadow copies of them on demand • e.g. Disk Subsystem, such as SVC or DS8000 • MS delivers ‘System Provider’ as part of the operating system • System Provider uses the ‘copy-on-write technique’

  5. General VSS Architecture

  6. Functional Objectives • Fast Backups- Perform on-line backups of the Exchange Server at snapshot speeds. • Off-loaded Backups - Off-load the backup of data to the TSM Server storage pools to another machine. • Fast Recovery - Perform very fast restores from Exchange Server backups. • Restore from local disk avoiding media mounts • Restore through volume snapshot • TSM Management of Snapshot Backups – Apply TSM policy to control number of snapshot versions and automatically release/reuse disk space when version limit exceeded • Integrated User Interface - Integrate the snapshot operations and legacy backup API operations into the same user interface.

  11. Exchange VSS Support Characteristics • Single command-line interface (CLI) for performing legacy and VSS snapshot backup, restore, and query operations • Single graphical-user interface (GUI) for performing legacy and VSS snapshot backup, restore, and query operations • Support for both Hardware & Software VSS providers • Those that strictly adhere to Microsoft VSS provider requirements • Operate in a clustered Exchange environment

  12. VSS Backup Functionality • Backup types: FULL, COPY • Backup granularity is at the "Storage Group" level. • Backups are managed through TSM Server policy. • Backups can be stored on local disk, the TSM Server, or both • specify different policy settings for each storage location • specify different policy settings for different backup types (Full, Copy) • Data movement to TSM Storage can be off-loaded to a secondary machine • requires a VSS hardware provider that supports transportable shadow copy volumes

  13. VSS Restore Functionality • Restore granularity is at the storage group or individual database level • Standard Restore paths for VSS backups • VSS Restore - Restore from TSM Server storage • VSS Fast Restore - Restore via file copy from mounted shadow copy image • Additional special Restore paths developed by IBM for SVC • VSS Instant Restore – FlashCopy shadow copy image to production volume • Specifically for IBM SAN Volume Controller (version 2.1 or later) • Competitive Advantage

  14. Supported Providers • All Providers (including DS4000, DS6000, DS8000, SVC, other vendors, …) on the Microsoft website are supported • IBM’s lab testing included: • System provider • IBM SVC • IBM DS4000 • IBM DS6000 • IBM DS8000 • IBM N-series / NetApp

  15. Benefits of TSM for CS • Fast non-disruptive Backups • Perform on-line backups of database applications at snapshot speed with virtually zero impact to the application. • Transfer data to the TSM Server storage pools from a secondary machine. • Fast / Instant Recovery • Restore from local disk avoiding media mounts • Restore through volume snapshot • Integrated Management of Backups • Support multiple persistent snapshots • Integrate snapshot operations and legacy backup API operations • Manage both through TSM server policy
