Articulators and mounting Dr. Ali Ehsan Kareem B. D. S., M. Sc./prosthodontist
The Articulator: is a mechanical device which represents the T.M.J and jaw members to which maxillary and mandibular casts may be attached to simulate mandibular movements. Requirments of articulators: Purposes of an articulator:
Classification of articulators: 1.plain line or simple hinge type or non adjustable or class I: • like slab articulator. 2.mean value type with fixed condylar path and incisal incline or class II articulator: • like hall articulator. 3.semi-adjustable articulator or class III • like dentatus and hanau models. 4.fully adjustable or class IV: • like denar model.
Face-bow:is a caliper-like instrument used to record the relationship of the maxillary arch to the condyles or TMJ, then transfer this relationship to the articulator. Components of the face-bow: 1. Fork:the part that connects between the occlusion rims and the face bow
2.Condylar rods: This part contact the skin over T.M.J 3.U-shaped frame: extend from the region of T.M.J to a position (5-7.5cm) in front of the face
Mounting Laboratory procedure: 1. The articulator should be clean. 2. The incisal pin flushed with the upper member of the articulator. 3. the incisal guide table at zero degree. 4. The mounting table properly fixed to the articulator. 5. Determine the midline of the cast. 6. With the wax knife 3 or 4 cuts are made on the base of upper and lower casts. 7. Alignment midline of upper bite rim and cast to the center of the mounting table.
8. Upper bite rim secured to the mounting table. 9. Enough space present between the cast and the upper member of articulator. 10. Thick creamy mix plaster is pored over the base of upper cast, then the upper member closed until the incisal pin touches the incisal table. 11. Then lower cast is mounted after taking centric relation of the mouth. 12. Upper and lower bite rim should be secured together by wax; lower bite rim should be secured to the lower cast 13. Care should be taken that there is no posterior interference between upper and lower casts.
Errors of mounting: 1. The record base is not properly secured to the cast. 2. Interference the casts posteriorly. 3. The incisal pin doesn't touch the incisal table 4. Wrong alignment the midline of the articulator with that of the casts and the bite rims. 5. Movement the casts during mounting. 6. Dimensional change in plaster mounting.
