WHO Strategy for Integrated NCD Prevention: Major Risk Factors 1. Tobacco use 2. Unhealthy diet 3. Physical Inactivity
Insufficient Physical Activity More than 65% of the world population is insufficiently active. Contributes to many NCDs: estimated impact approximately 2 million annual deaths.
Objectives of WHD 2002 • Raise awareness of physical inactivity in risk factors of NCD’s • Draw attention to the potential of prevention by changes in lifestyle
WHD Message • Individuals : Physical activity as a powerful mean to promote the growth of health. • Policy Makers : Policy decisions needed to increase people’s physical activity - I.e. safe streets, urban planning, traffic, school premises, school curricula
At least 30 minutes of daily physical activity is recommended for all ages
