A. Herlert, CERN PH-SME-IS ISOLDE scientific coordinator’s report ISCC meeting, June 23, 2010 Requests and schedule 2010 New Safety structure Status of experiments Status ISOLDE web page
New and active experiments at ISOLDE INTC February 2010 5 new experiments: IS499 – IS503 132 approved RIB shifts (out of 183 requested) 8 experiments completed (3 REX experiments): IS381, IS414, IS415, IS417, IS418, IS425, IS431, IS469 69 active experiments for 2010 beam period
Injector schedule 2010 (V1.7) ISOLDE dates: protons from PSB May 3 physics start ISOLDE May 6 protons stop November 22 (i.e. ~29 weeks for physics as compared to 31 weeks in 2009) Several long periods of MD partly with parasitic beam to ISOLDE (not guaranteed) Technical stops keep changing dates …
ISOLDE beam requests 2010 Beam requests: 627.5 RIB shifts requested by 50 experiments (19 with no request) For comparison to 551 RIB shifts requested in 2008 and 627 in 2009 Requested RILIS shifts: 350 >50% (337 in 2008 and 359 in 2009) Requested REX-ISOLDE RIB shifts: 333 (273 in 2009) Additional ~40 shifts for TISD, LOIs + off-line MD … Scheduled runs (present status): 469 RIB shifts in total (609 shifts for running period incl. PSB setup) 432 RIB shifts for 41 experiments 74 different beams 19 beams and 36 experiments not scheduled (27 of those with no request and/or completed) 7 REX-ISOLDE runs for 11 experiments with ~160 RIB shifts (~37%)
ISOLDE schedule 2010 - overview ISOLDE program 2010 (Version 1.2): physics started May 6 protons stop Nov. 22 ~29 weeks for physics So far scheduled: • 41 IS experiments • 3 TISD runs • 6 LOIs • >460 RIB shifts • >70 different beams GPS HRS
ISOLDE schedule 2010 – REX-ISOLDE • 25 active REX experiments • 17 requested beam • 11 scheduled • 3+3 share target/setup (but different beams) • 7 runs • 3 days for setup • + LOI (TF polarization) • + 2 WITCH on-line runs • Need REX-TRAP • Operation of WITCH still not compatible with EBIS/ LINAC operation
ISOLDE schedule 2010 – Targets • 28 target units planned • 12 for HRS • 16 for GPS • Some old or to be reused during period • 10 new UCx units (1 HD) • TISD • 3 dedicated runs: - Molten metal target plus VADIS - low work-function cavity + Sm RILIS - High density UCx
ISOLDE schedule 2010 – RILIS • 14 RILIS runs planned • No off-line run • 1 target test (Sm) • dense schedule • At scheme to be tested • >210 RIB shifts planned • >2000h operation
First on-line runs in 2010 TISD: Sm RILIS target test (with low work-function cavity) at GPS: No Sm beam observed – not successful SSP collections with YO HP target (GPS): Strong stable contamination present Not much physics output Good tests with promising yields of Fe and Cr beams SiC target with Mg RILIS (GPS): Despite some vacuum problems and contaminants good results for SSP Successful run for COLLAPS experiment (n-def Mg isotopes) ZrO target with RILIS for Cu (HRS): Successful run for COLLAPS experiment (n-def Cu isotopes) Good results for SSP despite RFQ problems YO CP target for 1st REX-ISOLDE run (GPS): 9C yield dropped quickly after start - not successful – need target test ZrO target with RILIS for Ga (HRS): Target broken right before on-line run - cancelled
New procedure for proposals Safety file for all experiments required • all new INTC proposals need to provide a ‘safety file’ with the submission of the proposal (or addendum) • Safety aspects will be discussed with CERN specialists before the INTC meeting • Approval from Research Board only with endorsed safety file More details soon …
Follow up: floor space for experiments HV PLAT- FORM ISOLTRAP MISTRAL COLLAPS CRIS MINIBALL Em Ch NICOLE ASPIC TAgS WITCH b
Status of experiments - MISTRAL • Clean-up ongoing • RFQ buncher and cooler of MISTRAL removed (shipped to University Mainz) • Removal of 22t magnet - opening to hall extension enlarged by 50cm - magnet ready for transport - Storage space not yet confirmed - expected removal July 2010 Oct 2009
Status of experiments - ASPIC • ISOLDE group owner of equipment • LOI endorsed at February 2010 INTC meeting • BMBF proposal not successful
Status of experiments - HV Platform Nov 2009 HV platform removed Collection point to be refurbished (work in progress)
Status ISOLDE web page New web page presently located at: http://isolde.web.cern.ch/ISOLDE/isoldenewweb All pages transferred - still corrections needed • Work and tests in progress old web page ‘frozen’ only new web page will be updated Will be moved to new location mid July 2010 http://isolde.web.cern.ch/ISOLDE/ Afterwards YOUR feedback is needed …
