Effect of DEM Resolution on Global Hydrologic Derivatives Jim Monty
Objectives • Utilize 2 or 3 different DEM resolutions to compare the effects on a model • Investigate if there are differences based on the topology of the watershed (“flat”, “hilly”, “mountainous”)
Flat (IN) Hilly (MI or SC) Au Sable Upper Wabash Mountainous (CO) • Upper Colorado
Required Data • Watershed information • Moderate network of stream gauges • Rainfall data • Land Use/Land Cover • Other data dependant on model inputs??
Methodology • At each resolution • Extrapolate rainfall amounts • Estimate land cover data (depending on method) • Use one year of data to validate the model • Track how long simulations take to run • Expectations • Resolution versus terrain type (how great are the improvements?) • Computation time (how do the improvements in resolution balance against computation needs?)
