  2. What should Lincoln do? Problem: The Union still has military forts located in the Confederate States. Lincoln does not want to start a war, but the forts need to be resupplied. He is afraid that if he resupplies the forts, the Confederates will attack. On the other hand, Lincoln does not want to look weak by giving the forts to the Confederates. What should he do to best avoid war?

  3. Fort Sumter • Lincoln resupplies Fort Sumter in S. Carolina - alerts Confederates of his actions • Confederates attack fort before supplies arrive, Union surrenders • This attack marks beginning of Civil War

  4. Border States 3’s: Look back at vocabulary for Civil War. Read the definition you wrote and explain the illustration to the group. Be ready to share what the 3 said!

  5. Border States • Definition: Slave states that did not want to secede: Delaware (DE), Maryland (MD), Kentucky (KY), Missouri (MO) • Location & resources were important to North & South • Decide to stay with Union • Virginia is split= W. Virginia and Virginia

Reflection Activity Write a headline for the beginning of the Civil War and draw a “photograph” for the headline, then write a caption for the “photo” You must have: -1 headline -1 picture w/ appropriate caption -headline must be exciting (make reader choose your story) -Picture must go along with news event
