Strategic Directions Regional Level • Establishing policies and strategies • Best practices for tourism operators • Supporting protected areas in public use and tourism management • Sharing information / capacity building / functional networks • Pilot and demonstration projects • Support for marketing and promotion

  3. ETPS tourism activities • Establishment of Tourism Network of professionals engaged in public use / tourism planning • Public Use plan for Coiba National Park, Panama • Engage dive tourism sector in best practices and monitoring • Opportunity for tourist donation scheme with IGTOA

  4. Where have we been successful? • Linking tourism and poverty reduction (Bolivia) • Inroads on public use planning (Canaima, Galapagos, Coiba, RECC, REVISICOF, Carrasco, Pilón Lajas) • Engaging communities and pilot projects (Laguna de Cube, Ciénega de Bañó, San Miguel de Bala, TES, Kausay Huasi, Mapajo, Uroy Uaray, Calderas) • Engaging private sector in best practices (GEF in Mindo and Galapagos, Peru, Bolivia)

Where have we been successful? • Establishing networks and building CI country program capacity (ETPS, Andes) • Building and engaging local and international partners (Provita, PAT, CVS, ASEC, Comite Nacional de Apoyo al Ecoturismo, APTAE, Jatun Sacha, EcoCiencia, TNC, UNESCO, Rainforest Alliance, Secretaria Pro Tempore CMAR, IGTOA, protected areas authorities throughout region, etc) • Economic valuation (VC analysis, Sustainable finance in ETPS, Valuation of tourism in SNAP, Ecuador) • “scaling up” our work (Bolivia)

Major challenges • Volatile political environments • Generally un-inspired tourism private sector • Lack of local capacity (partners) – who do we work with? • Funding is not a major challenge in some cases (Ecuador, Bolivia), but nearly impossible in others (Venezuela) • Balance between being an implementing agency and grant maker

  7. What do we need help in? • Engaging private sector – especially large scale (e.g., large cruise ships in Galapagos) • State of the art in public use planning and tourism management • Stronger links from DC with international outbound operators (e.g., IGTOA, Lindblad, etc) • Interest in more engagement from CI DC – exchange programs, funding opportunities, technical expertise, certification (what is our position?), internal and external promotion, etc...

  8. What can we offer? • Experience in review of legal / regulatory environment • Experience in Public Use Planning and tourism management • Verde Ventures experience in Galapagos and with Rainforest Expeditions • Knowledge of certification systems and best practices • Learning and applied experience with community projects • A learning environment for other regions and CI DC
