  2. Overview Writing Space Whats the matter with books? Books Paradox of a book Video Signs of Print

  3. “Today we are living in the late age of print. The evidence on senescence, if not senility, is all around us. And as we look up from our computer keyboards to the books on our shelves, we must ask ourselves whether, this will destroy that.” --Victor Hugo Ceci tuera cela

  4. Whats the Matter with Books? Jay David Bolter says, “The issue is not whether print technology will completely disappear; books may long continue to be printed for certain kinds of texts and for luxury consumption. But the Idea and ideal of the book will change: print will no longer define the organization and presentation of knowledge, as it has for the past 5 centuries.”

  5. Books • Books on whether computers will destroy or replace print.

  6. Paradox of a Book One of the ironies of our culture's fascination with virtual technologies is its fondness for consuming books and articles that proclaim the death of print culture--or its disappearance into the matrix --Robert Markley • Some people were concerned about books addressing new forms of info. technology and the future of print being contradictory matters. • The limitations, inconsistent or opposing views from these writers will be full of contradiction.

  8. It is not surprising that this is a book and not a computer program. --Rob Wittig “Spoken words are the signs of mental experience and written words are the signs of spoken words. Just as all men have not the same writing, so all men have not the same speech sounds, but the mental experiences, of which these are the primary signs are the same for all, as also are those things of which our experiences are the images" --Aristotle Signs of Print

  9. Signs of print Is a printed book better than an electronic book? Bolter says “This printed book can be about, but cannot be, an electronic book.” • Printed books can’t present itself as itself because of the demands and requirements of print. • The electronic book has more space, extra notes and expanded particular ideas, unlike the printed text which has limitations. • “This edition of writing space is meant to show how hypertext and other forms of electronic writing refashion or remediate the forms and genres of print.” • Signs do not refer to things that exist outside the system of signs; signs refer only to other signs. • Just like in a dictionary, words are defined by other words.

  10. Signs of Print • As you can see, there are constant changes in technology. • What a new technology is and what it will become is itself a product of the print media it is said to challenge and to be in the process of replacing. • Technology keeps changing and it will continue to change for the better and for our convenience. • Are we really going to miss this old media? • Its something we all are used to and some may hate change, but there’s nothing wrong with experiencing something new and different.

  11. So, What’s the Matter with books? • There’s nothing wrong with books, but when it comes to electronic books, some may find it more convenient and helpful. • What do you prefer?

  12. Summary • As the years go by, Books will still be around but they won’t exactly be used for knowledge but they will be used for certain texts. • The books mentioned has all of their different answers on the future of media. • The contradiction of the different writers, writing about the new technology is still a concern. • The video we watched gave very informative information about our new and future media • Signs of print, electronic and print.
