  1. Agenda 02/10/2012 Sponge: Define Globalization and ethnocentrism in your own words. Sponge Go over Mash Up 3) Globalization Intro 4) Globalization Activity SSSocC2: Students will evaluate how cultures develop and evolve. a. Explain cultural change and diversity include ethnocentrism, cultural relevance, folk culture, pop culture, counterculture, subculture, and culture shock. b. Compare material and non-material culture. c. Analyze the impact of globalization on US and other world cultures.

  2. Sponge (I will take these up today) 1) Define Globalization and ethnocentrism in your own words. 2) What does this cartoon represent?

  3. Globalization The world wide spread of political, economic, and social institutions through trade and the exchange of ideas. “While the world devours American hip-hop, America ignores the hip-hop of the rest of the world” “Raggaeton from Puerto Rico, grime from Britain, and baile funk from Brazil… dispels the notion that globalization breeds homogeneity” “Each is the product of a country importing American hip-hop, blending it with native traditions, and refashioning it in its own image”

  4. Ethnocentrism • The tendency to view ones own culture and group as superior to all other cultures and groups. • “While the world devours American hip-hop, America ignores the hip-hop of the rest of the world”

  5. Cultural Relevance • A belief that culture should be judged by their own standards.

  6. Activity • Research and find an example of globalization • Pick an example of material culture (music, fashion, movies, anything you are interested in…) • Trace the origins of that material culture. This material culture does not have to be American. • Describe the blend of cultures you can see in this material culture. • Describe how these blend of culture came to be- (immigration, technology… etc) • Describe how this piece of culture represents globalization.

  7. Example For example: Pick a Pitbull song- discuss how his music represents Reggaeton. What cultures can be seen in the music. How did that fusion happen? How does that song represent globalization?
